Shanrong was of the Zhou clan of Xiaoxi in Siming. He entered the Contemplation Chamber at Nanhu for sixteen years, reading the Canon and cultivating repentance retreats. He copied in gold the Lotus, Śūraṅgama, Vimalakīrti, Perfect Enlightenment, and Suvarṇaprabhāsa sūtras, and made Amitābha images; whenever there was a Dharma gathering, he would distribute them as gifts. He personally painted ink Guanyin images, giving them to whoever asked. Three years after Master Xuan's death, [Shanrong] suddenly took his sūtras and images and distributed them among his relatives and friends. He requested the assembly to chant the Samantabhadra Practice Sūtra and the Amitābha Sūtra, and amid the sound of chanting the Buddha's name, he sat cross-legged and passed away. At the time, this was regarded as fulfilling his Pure Land appointment with Master Xuan. His disciple Haiyin resembled him in high conduct.
