Gongjiong was a native of Junyi. He practiced the Samantabhadra repentance, not leaning his body [against anything] for thirty years. One day, Samantabhadra came riding a six-tusked elephant, and the ground turned completely silver in colour. In his later years, he specialized in lecturing on the Lotus Sūtra; whenever he came to the 'Parable of the Medicinal Herbs' chapter, rain would always fall from the heavens. He also composed a commentary on the Buddhabhūmi Sūtra, vowing to dedicate the merit of what it explained toward being reborn in the Pure Land. When the commentary was completed, an extraordinary five-coloured light illuminated his chamber. Gongjiong said, 'To be able at this time to ride the light and see the Buddha—my vow is fulfilled!' Thereupon he focused his mindfulness in contemplation of the West, ceased eating, and passed away.
