Zuo Shen was a native of Tiantai. He received the bodhisattva precepts from Shenzhao, carved statues of the Three Sages, chanted the Lotus Sūtra 3,400 times, and the Diamond Sūtra 20,000 times. Later he fell ill in bed and ordered his son, the śramaṇa Jingyuan, to chant the title of the Lotus Sūtra and re-administer the bodhisattva precepts. He dreamed of three tall men standing on a riverbank calling Shen to board a boat. He again invited monks to chant the Amitābha Sūtra, and suddenly said, 'I have already seen the Buddha's light.' He then sat upright, formed a mudrā, and passed away.
