Sun Liang lived in Qiantang. Living in seclusion, he read the Great Canon, having an especially deep grasp of the purports of the Avataṃsaka. He once relied on Vinaya Master Dazhi to receive the bodhisattva precepts, and daily made an assignment of ten thousand recitations of the Buddha's name, not stopping for twenty years. Suddenly he told his family to invite monks to recite the Buddha's name to assist his rebirth. After only half a day, he gazed toward the sky, joined his palms, and said, 'The Bhagavat and bodhisattvas have already deigned to descend.' He then withdrew to his seat and was transformed.
