The commentary says: The ultimate culmination of the [Buddha's] entire teaching career lies in opening and revealing [the real], and the wonderful merit of opening and revealing belongs to the Lotus Sūtra. As for other sūtras that have perfect teachings, they all carry the meaning of the Vaipulya period's simultaneous discourse on the four teachings. Yet Gushan wished to equate the Śūraṅgama Sūtra with the refined flavor of clarified butter of the Lotus Sūtra; this fails to consider how the Vaipulya accommodates sūtras, thereby losing the pure and unmixed intent of the Lotus Sūtra.
