At that time, Kauṇḍinya obtained the purity of the Dharma-eye (namely, the first fruit. In the Lotus Sūtra, the Medicine King Chapter mentions obtaining the purity of the Dharma-eye. Miaole states: 'How could Queen [Vaidehī] and the eighty thousand all uphold this sūtra, yet upon hearing the chapter obtain the Hinayāna fruit? The name is identical, but the meaning is distinct; one must weigh it carefully.' Based on this, one knows that the term 'purity of the Dharma-eye' is common to both the Mahāyāna and Hinayāna). The earth deity rejoiced and proclaimed aloud, 'Today the Tathāgata has turned the wonderful wheel of the Dharma here!' The devas in empty space transmitted the cry from one to another up to Akaniṣṭha Heaven (which is called the Ultimate Heaven of Form). The Bhagavat, knowing the thoughts of the other four men, broadly expounded the Four Truths for them again, and they also obtained the purity of the Dharma-eye. At that time, the five men addressed the Buddha, wishing to leave household life. The Bhagavat called to the five men: 'Come, bhikṣus!' Their beards and hair fell off of themselves, kāṣāyas covered their bodies, and they immediately became śramaṇas. The Buddha further expounded for them that the five aggregates are impermanent, suffering, empty, and non-self. With their outflows exhausted and their minds liberated, they became arhats. Thereupon, there were for the first time six arhats in the world: one arhat was the Buddha Jewel, the wheel of the Dharma of the Four Truths was the Dharma Jewel, and the five arhats were the Saṅgha Jewel. The Three Jewels were fully complete, being a field of merit for humans and devas (Yinguo jing).
