The Buddha told Bimbisāra: "In the past, after the extinction of Dīpaṃkara Buddha, there was a monkey who saw an arhat enter concentration. He immediately took the sitting mat, draped it as a kāṣāya, and walked around the monk. The monk arose from concentration and preached to him the three refuges, the five precepts, and the method of seeking bodhi. Having received the teaching according to instruction, the monkey leaped with joy, fell from a tree, died, and was reborn in the Tuṣita heaven. Encountering a bodhisattva one birth away from Buddhahood, he had the unsurpassed Path preached to him. Thenceforth, he encountered countless buddhas. In his final body, following immediately after Maitreya, he will attain bodhi, with the title Siṃhacandra Buddha. This is none other than the present Vasumitra" (Scripture on Siṃhacandra Buddha).
