Anciently, a brāhmaṇa named Kauśika, together with thirty-two friends, cultivated blessings and merit together. When their lives ended, they were all born on the summit of Mount Sumeru; Kauśika became the lord of the devas, and the thirty-two individuals became his assisting ministers (Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa). Anciently, after the parinirvāṇa of Kāśyapa Buddha, there was a woman who resolved her mind to repair a stūpa and was rewarded by becoming the lord of the devas, with thirty-two individuals assisting her in the repair and being rewarded by becoming assisting ministers; sovereign and ministers together make thirty-three (Vimalakīrti-bhāṣya; the Sanskrit term Daoli is translated here as Thirty-Three Heavens). Śakra dwells in the Śūraṅgama Samādhi, and when he becomes a Buddha in the future, his name will be Asanga (Fahua wenju).
