Śakra opened the coffin, took the Buddha's upper-right tooth, and erected a stūpa in heaven. The assembly collected the śarīra (here translated as 'bone-body'), filling eight golden jars, and brought them into the city of Kuśi[nagara] for seven days of offerings (Nirvāṇa). Eight kingdoms jointly divided the śarīra. King Ajātaśatru obtained eighty-four thousand portions, placed them in a casket of purple gold into the Ganges River, and built a stūpa to enshrine them (Aśokarājasūtra).
