In the third year, the Second Patriarch, Ānanda (meaning 'Joyous Joy', cousin of the Buddha), having maintained the Dharma for twenty years, entrusted the treasury of the Dharma to Śāṇavāsa (translated as 'Hemp Clothes') in the kingdom of Mathurā. Furthermore, in the midst of the Ganges, he magically transformed [the waters] into golden earth, preaching the Dharma and bestowing prophecies upon Madhyāntika (translated as 'Mid-River') and five hundred rṣis.
