In the first year of the Ganlu reign, the Indian monk Bai Yan arrived in Luoyang and translated six scriptures, including the Wuliang qingjing pingdengjue jing. The Tripiṭaka master Wuwei arrived in Jiaozhou and translated the Lotus Samādhi Sūtra.
Sun Hao, Lord of Wu, did not revere the Buddha's teaching and destroyed monasteries. He challenged Kang Senghui, saying, 'The Buddha speaks of retribution for good and evil; can this be heard?' Senghui said, 'When an enlightened ruler governs the realm with filial piety, red crows soar and the Old Man Star appears (the Book of Han says: when the Old Man Star of the South Pole appears, there is order and peace); when he nurtures all things with benevolence and virtue, sweet springs well forth and auspicious grain grows. Since good has its omens, evil is likewise.' Later, palace guards tending the gardens discovered a golden statue. Hao had it placed in a latrine and poured filth over it. Soon after, he contracted a swelling disease. A diviner said, 'You suffer because of offending a great spirit.' Hao realized [his error], retrieved the statue to venerate it, and invited Senghui to preach the Dharma, prostrating in repentance. He received the five precepts, his ailment was cured, and he honored Senghui as his master, once again establishing stupas and monasteries.
