In the nineteenth year, Confucius served as magistrate of Zhongdu. He instituted regulations for nourishing the living and sending off the dead; the old and the young ate different foods, and the strong and the weak had different responsibilities. In one year, the feudal lords of the four quarters took him as a model. Duke Ding said: 'What would it be like to govern Lu by this method?' The Master replied: 'Even the whole realm could be governed thus.'
