In the twenty-second year, Duke Ding met with Duke Jing of Qi at Jiagu. Confucius served as master of ceremonies. Qi returned the seized lands of Yun, Wenyang, and Guiyin to apologize for its misconduct. Confucius served as Minister of Justice (Da Sikou). In seven days, he executed Shaozheng Mao (a grand master who threw the government into disorder). He dismantled the walls of the three cities (Hou, Fei, and Cheng), strengthened the ducal house and weakened the private families, and exalted the sovereign while humbling the ministers. The transformative influence of his government flourished. In three months there was great order: those who sold lambs and piglets did not artificially inflate their prices (zhou is the same as yu, 'to sell'; jia is the same as jia, 'price'); men and women walked on separate sides of the road; lost articles were not picked up on the streets; and travellers from the four quarters arriving at the cities did not need to petition the authorities. Duke Ding accepted the female musicians sent from Qi and did not attend to affairs of state for three days, nor did he send the sacrificial meat from the suburban sacrifice to the ministers. Confucius thereupon departed and went to Wei.
