In the thirteenth year, an imperial decree sought a śramaṇa capable of expounding Master Daosheng's doctrine of sudden enlightenment. Yu Dengzhi reported Fayuan (yuan is pronounced yuan, an old tabooed name). Fayuan was summoned to an audience and explained it with thorough clarity. He Shangzhi sighed and said: 'I thought that with the passing of the Venerable Daosheng, the subtle words had ceased forever; now I hear once again discourse beyond worldly forms!' When Xiangong Temple was completed, the Master was summoned to reside there. The Emperor visited in person every time to listen to the Dharma.
Nun Zhidao of Jianjing Temple renounced the monastic path and married Liang Qunfu. She bore a son who was seven years old. The family was poor and had no clothes. Remembering that when she was a nun she had a Lotus Sūtra copied on white silk, she washed and beat it into cloth to dress her son. Suddenly sores broke out over his entire body, surrounded by white maggots; he wailed for over ten days and died. A voice was heard proclaiming in the sky: 'Ruining the scripture to make clothes incurs this severe retribution!'
