In the first year of the Yongxing era, the Western Indian monk Jīvaka arrived in Luoyang. Pointing to the monk Zhu Fayuan, he said, 'This bodhisattva came from among the sheep.' Seeing Zhu Faxing, he said, 'This bodhisattva came from among the gods.' He also said, 'The monastics' robes are magnificent and splendid, greatly violating the monastic precepts.' Looking toward the imperial palace, he remarked, 'It broadly resembles the Trāyastriṃśa Heaven. Does it not exhaust the strength of the people and run to excess?' Soon thereafter, Luoyang fell into chaos.
