In the fifth year, when the Emperor was ill, he summoned the eminent monk Fakai to examine his pulse. Knowing that the Emperor would not recover, Fakai was unwilling to offer medicine. The Empress was enraged and imprisoned him. Soon after, the Emperor passed away, and he was released. Someone asked him, 'You are lofty, brilliant, firm, and simple; why do you keep medical arts in your mind?' The Master said, 'To illuminate the six perfections so as to eliminate the ailments of the four Māras, and to adjust the nine pulse conditions so as to cure diseases of wind and cold—is it not permissible to benefit oneself and benefit others?' Sun Chuo said, 'With talent and eloquence unconstrained, he penetrates the Great Teaching through arts and calculations—that is Master Kai!'
