On the fifteenth day of the second month, the Buddha was in the city of Kuśinagara (translated as 'Triangle'), at the birth-place of the Mallas, between the twin śāla trees. When on the verge of nirvāṇa, he emitted a great voice and addressed the great assembly universally: 'Today the World-Honoured One is about to enter nirvāṇa. If any sentient beings have doubts, they may now ask everything as their final questions.' At that time, in the early morning, the World-Honoured One emitted various lights from his mouth, shining universally through the ten directions. Sentient beings of the six destinies said to one another: 'We should hasten to go and exhort the Tathāgata not to enter parinirvāṇa' (Mahāparinirvāṇa Sutra).
