As the Tathāgata was about to enter nirvāṇa, the devas and the great assembly all came to make offerings; only the Conch-Tufted Brahmā King did not come to pay his respects. At that time, the great assembly detested his arrogance and dispatched hundreds of thousands of spell-holding ṛṣis to go there and seize him, but they saw various kinds of filth formed into ramparts and moats, and they violated the spells and died. Again, they mobilized immeasurable vajra-holders carrying spells to go, yet even after seven days no one could capture him. The great assembly lamented and spoke a gāthā. The Tathāgata then, by the spiritual power of his Great Universal Knowledge, manifested an Indestructible Vajra from beneath his left heart, who displayed great spiritual penetrations amidst the assembly, causing the three-thousand-world system to quake in six ways. He then leapt into the air to the place of the Brahmā King, pointed at those filthy substances and turned them into earth, and said to the Brahmā King: 'You are greatly foolish! The Tathāgata is about to enter nirvāṇa; why do you not go?' He then, with the indestructible power of the vajra, pointed slightly at him, whereupon the Brahmā King generated the mind [for bodhi] and went to the Tathāgata's place (The Essential Gate of the Efficacy of Ucchuṣma-vajra; the title refers to Ucchuṣma [Filth-Clearing] because, as the sūtra says: 'The vajra pointed at the Brahmā King's filthy substances and turned them into earth,' meaning that he transformed that filthy realm through spiritual penetrations, and hence was named Ucchuṣma-vajra).
