One hundred years after the extinction of the World-Honoured One, in the city of Vaiśālī, the Vṛjiputraka monks arbitrarily practiced ten points: permitting taking food with two fingers; taking food between villages; taking food inside a monastery; subsequent permission; standard practice; and receiving gold and silver. On the poṣadha day, when donors gave gold and silver, they divided it among themselves. In this way, each item was examined and inspected one by one, up to the conclusion that the ten points were contrary to the Dharma, contrary to the Vinaya, and not what the Buddha taught. Seven hundred arhats assembled to discuss the Dharma and Vinaya; hence it is called the Council of Seven Hundred (*Four-Part Vinaya*).
