In the fourth year [708], on the third day of the third month, Great Master Sangha manifested cessation while seated. An imperial order was issued to lacquer his body and erect a pagoda at Jianfu Monastery. Suddenly, a foul stench filled the city. An edict ordered him returned to Sizhou, whereupon an exquisite fragrance immediately filled the imperial capital. The emperor asked Wanhui: 'Who was Sangha?' He replied: 'A transformation body of Avalokiteśvara.'
In the fifth month, there was a great drought. An imperial decree ordered Bodhiruci to erect an altar at Chongfu Monastery to pray for rain; after three days there was a great downpour (gloss: *zhu*, timely rain).
An imperial edict commanded that an unrestricted great assembly be held at Huadu Monastery.
Bodhiruci presented newly translated scriptures. The emperor held a banquet in the Linguang Hall and observed the debates among the śramaṇas. He decreed the painter Zhang Xun to depict the eminent translation masters and the various scholars on the palace walls, and personally composed encomiums.
