Jia Dao was originally a Buddhist monk named Wuben. When he arrived at the Eastern Capital, monks were prohibited from going out after midday. Dao composed a poem lamenting his fate. Han Yu thereupon taught him to write prose; he subsequently left the Buddhist monkhood and passed the jinshi examination. There was a certain Li Dong who admired Dao's poetry; he cast an image [of him] to serve him, and once called him 'the Buddha Jia Dao.'
