In the third year, in the fifth month, there was a drought. The Emperor went to Xiangguo Temple to pray for rain, issuing an edict to suspend musical performances and commanding the imperial chefs to serve vegetarian food; shortly after, abundant rain brought relief. From the Western Regions, the Śramaṇa Shanming and seven others from the Kingdom of Khotan arrived; an edict ordered them lodged at Xiangguo Temple. Zhou Xingfeng, Prince of Chu, held Tanzhou and was decisive in slaughter; nevertheless, he knew to serve the Buddha, ordain monks, and maintain vegetarian feasts and repentances without cease. Whenever he saw a śramaṇa, he would pay homage and serve food with his own hands, saying to his attendants, "I have killed many men; without relying on the Buddha's power, how can I resolve the enmity?" In the eleventh month, the Kingdom of Gaochang sent the monk Fayuan to present a pratyekabuddha tooth and jade vessels.
