An exposition says: I have examined the scripture gateways through all one hundred and three fascicles; there are eighty-four sections in total. Now, the various doctrinal texts call them eighty-one sections with names and forms; this must be an error of lineage transmission. Wo was originally a wealthy magnate who at first did not believe in the Dharma. Due to a single conversion by the śramaṇa, he became able to recite the Prajñā[-pāramitā] by heart. Yet, not knowing to dedicate the merit towards the Pure Land, upon his death he was reborn as the ruler of Japan. On his back was an inscription reading: 'Wo Chengzhang of the Great Song.' The Japanese recount it thus. (When this humble person, Yuebo, resided together with Ruxi, who could pass through the gateways of this scripture, some of the assembly at that time wished to receive it. Thereupon, Wo's edition was used for the first time to carve one fascicle of scripture gateways to encourage the world; I have therefore recorded Chengzhang's original story).
