When Zhizhe flourished with this Way in his time, the texts in praise of his virtue by renowned worthies of antiquity and today—such as Liu Guyan's Guoqing Stele, Huangfu Bi's Yuquan Stele (these two writings are found in the Guoqing bailu), the Anonymous True Record of Yuquan (this stele is a re-carved text of which an ink rubbing was once obtained), Tang Liang Su's Stele for Grand Master Jingxi, Song Zhang Shangying's Record of the Ancestral Hall of Lord Guan, Hu Fang's Stele for Dharma Master Fazhi, and Chao Shuozhi's Stele for Dharma Master Mingzhi—have all had their essential matters extracted and incorporated into the Annals and Biographies, and their full texts are not recorded separately again. Yet, from the Tang down to the present, how numerous are the stele records, treatises, and prefaces that adorn the Great Teaching! Now I record the most outstanding among them to make the 'Treatise on Celebrated Writings That Illumine the Teaching'.
