The Tenth Patriarch, the Venerable Puṇyayaśas, was a man of the kingdom of Pāṭaliputra. His knowledge was profound, and he was broadly learned with an extensive memory. Earlier, when the Bhikṣu Pārśva arrived in that kingdom, he stayed beneath a tree, pointed to the ground, and said: "If this ground turns the colour of gold, a holy person will arrive." Having spoken these words, the ground indeed became gold. Soon afterwards, Yaśas indeed arrived. [Pārśva] thereupon accepted him as a disciple and entrusted him with the Dharma-treasury. Using skilful means, he transformed and saved living beings. Having completed what was to be done, he entered nirvāṇa. The assembly collected his relics and erected a stūpa to make offerings to them (*Fu fazang jing*).
