The twentieth patriarch, the Venerable Vasubandhu, was a native of the country of Rājagṛha, belonging to the Vaiśākha clan. His mother dreamt that she swallowed two pearls, one bright and one dark, and upon waking found herself pregnant. After seven days, an arhat named Bhadrajana arrived at their home. His father, Prabhāpāla, offered prostrations, which Bhadrajana accepted. When the mother came out to bow, Bhadrajana vacated his seat and said, 'I return the courtesy to a great being of the Dharmakāya.' He said to Prabhāpāla, 'Your wife carries a holy son; therefore I vacated my seat, not out of reverence for a woman.' He also said, 'Your wife will give birth to two sons: one named Vasubandhu, and the second named Chuni (which means "wild magpie"). Long ago, when the Tathāgata cultivated the Way on the Snowy Mountains, a wild magpie nested upon his uṣṇīṣa. After the Buddha attained the Way, the wild magpie was reborn as the king of the country of Nadi. The Buddha prophesied that in the second five hundred years he would be born into the Vaiśākha family of the city of Rājagṛha, sharing the same womb with a sage; now this is not mistaken.' One month later, she indeed gave birth to two sons. Bandhu later met Jayata. On the day he left the household life, he moved the Bodhisattva Vibhāha to act as his karmadāna. Having heard much and being skillful in understanding, he universally converted all living beings. When approaching nirvāṇa, he ascended into the sky to a height of half a yojana, returned to his seat, and entered extinction. The assembly gathered his relics, enshrined them in a stupa, and made offerings to them (Fu fazang jing).
