Under Emperor Taizong of the Tang: Dharma Master Shandao went to the capital and produced more than a hundred thousand fascicles of the Amitābha Sūtra, and painted over three hundred Pure Land transformation tableaux; all throughout Chang'an followed his transformation (and so on). ○ Under Emperor Dezong: Dharma Master Fazhao practiced the Five Assemblies in Bingzhou, teaching people to recite the Buddha's name. The Emperor heard the sound of reciting the Buddha's name in the northeast, and sent an envoy who traced it to Taiyuan; he then welcomed him into the palace to teach the palace ladies to recite the Buddha's name, also using the Five Assemblies. ○ The śramaṇa Shaokang went to Xinding to transform the people of the commandery to recite the Buddha's name; every time he ascended the seat to chant the Buddha's name, the assembly saw a Buddha emerge from his mouth; chanting ten times in succession, they saw ten Buddhas. Later he emitted several rays of extraordinary light and passed away. ○ Under Emperor Xuanzong: Bai Juyi painted a set of the Western Pure Land and made offerings day and night; one evening he recited the Buddha's name and transformed. ○ Under Emperor Yizong: Dhyāna Master Quanzhen of Xiangshan passed away while sitting; the world called him a manifestation of Amitāyus Buddha.
