The eulogy says: Nanyue transmitted the path of the threefold contemplation in a single mind, which he had received from Beiqi, to Tiantai. The greatness of his achievements was unsurpassed. Thus Zhāng'ān said: 'Dhyāna Master Si's fame was loftier than Mount Song, and his practice was deeper than the Yi and Luo rivers (an analogy for the height and depth of his renown and practice). For ten years he constantly recited; for seven years he practiced the Vaipulya [penance]; for ninety days he constantly sat; and in a single moment he attained perfect realization (see the Separate Biography of Tiantai).' The Master's own practice was indeed diligent. As for his awakening to the Lotus Samādhi and his opening of the doctrinal portals, these were things that Beiqi had not yet known. Therefore, Jīngxī also said: 'Dhyāna Master Wen only set forth internal contemplation of seeing and hearing, nothing more (see the Outline of the Great Calming and Contemplation).' How could this not be trusted?
