The twelfth patriarch, the Venerable of Right Concentration, Wuwai, was surnamed Yang, a native of Houguan in Min. For a long time he followed Master Xiu to transmit the *Zhiguan*, both explaining and practicing it. Toward the end of Dazhong (under Emperor Xuanzong), there was a year of famine; he sat cross-legged in a single room and wondrously entered right concentration, saying to his disciples: 'If you do not die, when the five grains ripen, you may strike the chime stone to lead me out.' After more than a year, the disciples acted as instructed, and he thereupon arose from concentration. On the fifteenth day of the third month in the fifth year of Zhonghe (under Emperor Xizong), he passed away at Guoqing and was buried beside the stūpa courtyard of Great Master Zhiyi. His senior disciples were Yuanxiu, Jingxiu, and Huining, all of whom transmitted the Way in the world to carry on the family lineage.
