Chan Master Zhikai was of the Xiahou clan from Yuzhang. He was thoroughly versed in the Three Treatises and renowned in his time. When he met Zhiyi, he received the Chan methods and experienced deep awakening. In his later years, he entered Mount Lu and built Dalin Hermitage, focusing his intent on the practice of Chan, so that none could measure his realization. For more than twenty years, his shadow never entered the mundane world. When Emperor Wen of the Sui summoned him to the capital, he declined on grounds of illness and did not go. The Governor of Yuzhang Commandery requested him to lecture on the Lotus Sūtra; he firmly refused, saying, 'I should finish my life in my mountain dwelling.' Soon after, when monastics and laity pleaded incessantly, he reluctantly went for their sake; before the lecturing was finished, he indeed died at the monastery of the prefectural seat. Only then did people realize his foreknowledge. At that time, the summer heat was intense, yet he sat upright as if alive; a wondrous fragrance filled the city and ceased only after several days. The assembly escorted his meditation coffin back to be buried at Mount Lu.
