(6) Mount Meru has four tiers. Beginning from the edge of the water and extending upward for ten thousand yojanas is the first tier, protruding sixteen thousand yojanas from the flanks of Mount Meru. Ascending ten thousand yojanas higher is the second tier, protruding eight thousand yojanas. Ascending ten thousand yojanas higher is the third tier, protruding four thousand yojanas. Ascending ten thousand yojanas higher is the fourth tier, protruding two thousand yojanas. On the summit of Mount Meru, at each of the four corners, a peak rises, four and a half yojanas high, one hundred twenty-five yojanas wide, and five hundred yojanas in circumference; yakṣa deities abide upon them. On the top of this mountain are the Thirty-Three Gods. The central city is called Sudarśana; made of pure gold, it is one and a half yojanas high, two thousand five hundred yojanas on each side, and ten thousand yojanas in circumference. The substance of the city is gold, and it is entirely adorned with one hundred and one various jewels. Its ground is soft, like cotton from the tūla tree. On the four sides of this city there are sixteen thousand jeweled pillars, jeweled beams, jeweled rafters, and jeweled eaves. On the four sides are four gates, and there are also a thousand minus one small gates. There are four great avenues, which have various small alleys. Beside the four gates, five hundred devaputras, all clad in firm armor, guard these gates. Within the city is Śakra's palace, called the Most Victorious Place, also called the Palace of Excellence. Its shape is square, four hundred and a half yojanas high, two hundred fifty yojanas on each side, and one thousand yojanas in circumference, with one hundred and one battlements. Each battlement has seven pavilions; each jeweled pavilion has seven small pavilions; each small pavilion has seven ponds; each pond has seven lotus flowers; upon each flower are seven boys and seven girls playing various kinds of music, singing and dancing in joyful revelry. East of Sudarśana City is the place of various mounts, called the Park of Chariots, one thousand yojanas high. To the south, facing the place of battle, is the Park of Harshness. To the west, the place for various strolls, is the Park of Assorted Pleasures. To the north, the place for games and roaming, is called the Park of Delight. Their length and breadth are the same as the former. Extending twenty yojanas outside these parks are fine lands, called Chariot, Harsh, Assorted, and Delightful, equal in measure to the four parks. Northeast of Sudarśana is a wish-fulfilling tree named Pārijāta, also called the Tree of Rounded Growth. Its roots go fifty yojanas deep, its height is one hundred yojanas, and its branches spread fifty yojanas to the sides, able to bestow the pleasures of desire. Beneath it is a flat stone called *Armalikā(?), white in color like fine cotton cloth, fifty yojanas on each side and two hundred yojanas in circumference. Southwest of Sudarśana is the gathering place of the gods, named the Hall of the Good Dharma, nine hundred yojanas in circumference, circular in shape. In the center of this hall is Śakra's throne, made of pure gold. Surrounding this throne are the seats of the thirty-two auxiliary ministers, all arranged in rows. Ascending eighty thousand yojanas above the Thirty-Three Gods, dwelling upon the wind in the realm of empty space and made of various jewels, is the palace of the Yāma Heaven, twice the measure of the summit of Mount Meru. Ascending one hundred sixty thousand yojanas higher, dwelling upon the wind in the realm of empty space and made of various jewels, is the palace of the Tuṣita Heaven, twice the length and breadth of Yāma. Ascending three hundred twenty thousand yojanas higher, dwelling upon the wind in the realm of empty space and made of various jewels, is the palace of the Nirmāṇarati Heaven, twice the length and breadth of Tuṣita. Ascending six hundred forty thousand yojanas higher, dwelling upon the wind in the realm of empty space and made of various jewels, is the palace of the Paranirmitavaśavartin Heaven, twice the length and breadth of Nirmāṇarati. This is the desire realm. Above it is the First Dhyāna. A world-realm of four continents, with its seven mountains, Mount Meru, the surrounding mountain range, the six heavens of the desire realm, and the First Dhyāna, counted from one up to a thousand, constitutes a minor chiliocosm, encircled by a minor Iron Enclosing Mountain. These minor chiliocosms, counted from one up to a thousand, constitute a medium chiliocosm, encircled by a medium Iron Enclosing Mountain. These medium chiliocosms, counted from one up to a thousand, constitute a great trichiliocosm, encircled by a Great Iron Enclosing Mountain. In this way, there are ten billion such four-continent world-realms and the like, all distributed in order. In the dark spaces between the Iron Enclosing Mountains and the various continents and mountains, there is neither day nor night, and one cannot see one's raised hand. The measure of the First Dhyāna Heaven equals a four-continent world-realm. The measure of the Second Dhyāna Heaven equals a minor chiliocosm. The measure of the Third Dhyāna Heaven equals a medium chiliocosm. The measure of the Fourth Dhyāna Heaven equals a great trichiliocosm. Their distances between each other double progressively; these are called the form realm. As for the formless realm, it has no distinct physical location. If there are beings born there, wherever they die, in that very place they abide in the formless absorptions; therefore it is called formless.
