(4) Dharma Master Baoqiong was appointed by Emperor Xuan of the Chen dynasty as the Controller of the Saṃgha. His governance was well-regulated, and the fourfold assembly was at ease with it. He frequently entered the Chongyun Hall to expound the Dharma, and the emperor honored him as his master. Formerly, between the Liang and Wei dynasties, Controllers of the Saṃgha were accompanied by ostentatious guards with canes and staffs, usurping the style of government offices. When it came to Qiong, he petitioned to abolish this; whenever he went out, only a few dhūtas accompanied him with staffs and bamboo hats. At that time, across the Eastern Sea there were twelve kingdoms; hearing of Qiong's virtue and knowing they could not see him, they sent envoys presenting gold and silk to request a portrait of Qiong. Such was the reverence and admiration the world held for him. When he passed away, Dharma Master Tanyan succeeded him as Controller of the Saṃgha, also enjoying great renown. When Yan was born, all forty teeth were already fully grown, which astonished the whole world.
