On the tenth day of the fifth month, Emperor Wu of the Zhou held a great assembly of all his ministers to examine the treatise submitted by Luan. Judging that it harmed and undermined the Daoist teaching and did not accord with his original intention, he had it burned with fire, and that was all. The treatise is recorded in full in the Hongming ji. The Zhou Grand Master Zhen Luan was truly a gentleman of lofty insight. He was not one who feared a great enemy yet was brave against a small enemy. The king ordered him to determine the merits and demerits of the two teachings, and he analyzed them straightforwardly with correct views, without allowing biased inclinations into his heart, authoring this treatise to praise, blame, approve, and condemn. The Classic of Poetry says: 'Gentle and modest is the gentleman, who seeks blessing without deviousness'—does this not apply to him? How lamentable that it was burned!
