(Jiawu) Zhou proscribed the Śākya [teachings]. On the seventeenth day of the fifth month in the third year of Jiande, Emperor Wu of Zhou ultimately developed jealousy and believed Zhang Bin's proposal, desiring to proscribe only the teachings of the Śākyas. Thereupon, he convened a grand assembly of all officials, ordering the śramaṇas and Daoist masters to debate their superiority and inferiority. He secretly instructed Zhang Bin to adorn deceitful arguments beforehand to crush the disciples of the Śākya, hoping they would be worsted in doctrine and ousted. At that time, Dharma Master Zhixuan responded to the Emperor; his speech was rigorous and robust. The Emperor realized that Bin could not overcome him, so he immediately displayed his imperial majesty and delivered a barrage of difficult arguments. Those on the left and right rebuked Xuan, telling him to heed the imperial decree. Xuan calmly replied, setting forth principles that grew even loftier. None of the attendant high officials was not moved to admiration and praise. The Emperor could not bend him. The following day, an edict was issued, and the Daoist religion was abolished along with [Buddhism].
