(25) Master Wenzhong lectured on the Way at the brook of Baiwu. Disciples held their books, facing north, surrounding the hall in rows. When the lecture ended, scholar Cheng retired to reflect beneath the pines. The conversation turned to the Zhou Changes, and Xue Shou sighed, saying, "Does it not fall short of Fuxi? Why are there so many words?" Shortly thereafter, a man carrying poria fungus, white-haired, laid down his burden, rested, and said, "Why do you sigh, my young master?" Xue Shou said, "What do you do, old gentleman, to question my sigh?" The fungus carrier said, "What attaches to vermilion turns red; what adjoins ink turns black; one takes it on by gradual immersion. Now what you wear, young master, is the Way, and yet you sigh; this means your six organs and five viscera cannot receive it. That is why I ask." Shou said, "I have heard from my teacher: the Changes is the treasury of the Way. Fuxi drew the hexagrams, and King Wen attached the commentaries to them; this did not match the brevity of writing without them. That is why I sighed." The fungus carrier said, "Where was King Wen defective? Fuxi was the one who was gravely defective! Long ago, before Fuxi drew the hexagrams, were the Three Powers not established? Did the four seasons not circulate? Were the hundred things not generated? Were the myriad phenomena not dense and manifold? Why busily labor to waste effort drawing them? Ever since Fuxi disclosed the secret of the Way and leaked the mechanism of the divine, dividing the Great Harmony and lacerating the primordial qi, he caused the clever people of the realm to bring forth devious ways contrary to nature, claiming: 'I am good at interpreting images and discerning the natures of things.' Yin and yang rub against each other, the distant and near take from each other, producing theories of firm and yielding, sameness and difference, so as to alarm human intent. Thereupon the knowing ceased to know, and the Great Simplicity was scattered. Thus Fuxi was the first omen of chaos; how can you waste your sigh to bemoan King Wen?" Carrying his fungus, he walked away. They pursued him and asked for his residence, surname, and name, but he did not answer. When Master Wenzhong heard of this, he said, "He is a recluse."
