是歲夏四月。太子建成秦王世民。怨隙已成將興內難。而又邊境屢優軍國務殷。傅奕妄生毀佛。乞行廢教之請復云云未決。及法琳等諸僧著論辨之。合李黃門內德論。同進之于朝。帝由是悟奕等譽道毀佛為協私。大臣不獲已。遂兼汰二教而施行焉。五月辛巳。詔曰。

In the fourth month, summer of that year, the rift between Crown Prince Jiancheng and Qin Prince Shimin had already deepened, and an internal crisis was about to break out; moreover, the borders were repeatedly anxious and military and state affairs were pressing. Fu Yi recklessly slandered the Buddha and petitioned to abolish the teaching; the court was debating without resolution. When the monk Falin and others wrote treatises to refute him, combining them with Gentleman Li Huangmen's 'Discourse on Inner Virtue' and submitting them together to the court, the Emperor realized that Fu Yi and others were praising Daoism and slandering Buddhism out of private malice. The high ministers, having no choice, thereupon carried out a joint purge of both teachings. On the xinwei day of the fifth month, an edict was issued saying:
