(10. Yihai) In the ninth year, the tenth month, Dharma Master Xuanwan passed away at Yanxing Monastery. In his dying memorial, he submitted: "Sagely emperors and enlightened kings in meting out rewards and punishments never act without discrimination and deep compassion toward the Three Jewels. When śramaṇas break the law, they should not be subjected to the same codes as the common people; I beg that they be remanded to their respective monastic offices to be dealt with according to the monastic vinaya." In addition, he presented one fascicle each of the Anyang lun and the Sande lun. The Emperor approved and accepted it, issuing an edict expressing his grief and condolences, sending the Crown Prince to offer condolences in person, and decreeing that the responsible officials provide the funeral accoutrements. Imperial funerals decreed for śramaṇas in the Tang began with Wan.
