(12. Bingshen) "supplemented by the golden codes, to clearly formulate regulations and statutes." In the tenth year, the Crown Prince asked Zhang Shiheng, "In serving the Buddha and cultivating merit, what is the retribution?" He replied, "Serving the Buddha lies in purity, benevolence, and forbearance. If one is greedy, arrogant, and cruel, even if one exhausts one's wealth to serve Him, it will not avert misfortune. Moreover, the retribution for good and evil is inevitable, just like a shadow following a form. The words of the sages are complete on this. If a ruler is enlightened, a minister loyal, and a son filial, then fortune and blessings will endure; if one acts contrary to this, disaster will arrive." At that time, the Crown Prince harbored rebellious intentions, so Shiheng used this reply to remonstrate with him.
