([Year] seven, bingchen) In the first month of the change of reign to Xianqing, on the day bingyin, Hong, King of Dai, was made Crown Prince. On this day, five thousand monks were provided a meal at Ci'en Monastery. An imperial order was issued to the Vice Director of the Chancellery Xue Yuanchao to oversee the affair. He subsequently asked Dharma Master Xuanzang about the formats of translation of scriptures in previous eras. [Xuanzang] replied: "Since the Han and Wei dynasties are distant, they cannot be discussed in detail. From the Jin and Song onwards, translation of scriptures has always had officials who supervised the reading and carefully compiled [the texts]. Therefore, when Dharmanandin translated scriptures under Fu Jian, the Gentleman of the Yellow Gate Zhao Zheng held the brush. When Kumārajīva translated scriptures under Yao Xing, Xing and Yao Song held the brush. When Bodhiruci translated scriptures under the Later Wei, Attendant Officer Cui Guang received and recorded the text with the brush. This continued all the way through the Liang, Chen, Zhou, and Sui dynasties; all were likewise. In the early years of the Zhenguan era, when Prabhākaramitra translated scriptures, the late Emperor decreed that Xiao Gong, Prince of Zhaojun, and Du Zhenglun, Supervisor of the Household of the Crown Prince, oversee and protect [the project]. Currently, this is peculiarly lacking. Moreover, the grandeur and beauty of the buildings of Da Ci'en Monastery are rarely rivalled in ancient or modern times, yet a stele has not yet been erected. This poor monk harbours these two matters in mind and wishes to bring them to the attention of His Majesty." Yuanchao memorialised his words, and an imperial decree granted approval.
