(12; wuwu) In the fourth month of summer, twice seven monks and Daoists each were summoned into the palace to debate. The Daoist Li Rong established a thesis based on the "original limit" (benji). Dharma Master Yibao questioned him, saying: "Since you designate the original limit, does the Dao originate in the limit, or does the limit originate in the Dao?" Rong said: "Both obtain mutually." Bao said: "If the Dao originates in the limit, making the limit the origin of the Dao, then can the limit also originate in the Dao, making the Dao the source of the limit?" Rong said: "That also holds." Bao said: "If the original limit and the Dao mutually obtain and reverse each other, then could nature (ziran) and the Dao also mutually emulate each other?" Rong said: "The Dao emulates nature; nature does not emulate the Dao." Bao said: "If so, then the Dao originates in the limit, but the original limit does not originate in the Dao." Realizing the fault in his earlier words, Rong no longer defended his thesis and mocked Bao with other remarks. Bao said with a stern expression: "Establishing a thesis before the Lord of Ten Thousand Chariots is meant to elucidate the heterodox and the orthodox to inform the Emperor's mind. How can one sully the heavenly ears with frivolous talk?" Rong was ashamed and submitted. The Emperor commended Bao and ordered that Rong be led down from the dais. He invited Huang Yi to debate with Bao, and they concluded only at nightfall.
