In this year, Upādhyāya Rang was born on the eighth day of the fourth month. Six plumes of white vapor pierced the sky. The Grand Astrologer reported it to the throne: "This is a sign of virtue, which should correspond to the gate of emptiness (Buddhism)." The Emperor asked, "In which direction?" The astrologer replied, "The sector of Ankang." Shortly after, Han Xie, Governor of Jinzhou, submitted a full memorial reporting the matter. The Emperor said: "The virtue of a man of the Way is a wholesome blessing to the state." He ordered Xie to visit in person to comfort and nurture him, and also generously bestowed expenses for his upbringing, so that his whole family was favored. When he grew up, he left the household, and indeed transmitted the mind-seal of the Sixth Patriarch, dwelling at the Southern Peak to magnify the school of teaching.
