The Old History of the Tang states: "At the end of the Later Wei, there was a monk named Bodhidharma, originally a prince of India, who left the household by yielding his realm, and attained the marvelous Dharma of the Chan school. It is said that from Śākyamuni it was handed down using the robe and bowl as a sign, transmitted from generation to generation. Bodhidharma, carrying the robe and bowl, came by sea. He first arrived in the Liang state; Emperor Wu questioned him on conditioned affairs, which displeased Bodhidharma. He then went to Wei and hid at Shaolin Temple on Mount Song. He met with poison and died. In that year, an envoy of Wei returning across the Pamirs saw him. His disciples opened his tomb, but found only a single shoe. Bodhidharma transmitted it to Huike; Ke once severed his arm to seek his Dharma. Ke transmitted it to Sengcan; Can transmitted it to Daoxin; Xin transmitted it to Hongren. Ren's surname was Zhou, a native of Huangmei; he resided together with Xin at Dongshan Temple. The world called their Dharma the Dongshan Dharma Door."
