(21) The Venerable Buddhapāla of Northern India reached Qingliang Mountain at Wutai, where he met an old man who asked, "Why have you come?" Pāla replied, "I seek to pay homage to Mañjuśrī." The old man asked, "Did you bring the Uṣṇīṣa Vijaya Dhāraṇī?" Pāla replied, "Not yet." The old man said, "The sentient beings of this land are increasingly evil, and those who have left the household violate the four parājikas particularly often. If you do not carry this dhāraṇī with you, what benefit is there in coming from afar? Can you go back to fetch it so as to circulate it in this land?" Buddhapāla bowed and returned. In the first year of the Kaiyao era, he retrieved the dhāraṇī and reached Chang'an. An edict ordered Tripiṭaka Master Divākara to translate it. Hearing that this dhāraṇī had extraordinary spiritual efficacy, the Emperor kept it secretly in the palace. Buddhapāla repeatedly submitted memorials requesting that it be distributed throughout the realm; Emperor Gaozong had no choice but to comply. Pāla then took leave and entered Wutai, and his final end was not known. At that time in Southern India was Bodhiruci, who practiced dhūta austerities; he received the Way from Yaśoghoṣa and was a master in the Western Regions whose fame shook China. The Emperor heard of his renown and was delighted; sending an envoy to the Western Regions, he issued an edict earnestly inviting him.
