(22) In this year, Dharma Master Kuiji of Ci'en died at the age of fifty-one. An imperial edict was issued mourning his passing, and an imperial panegyric for his portrait was composed. By imperial decree he was buried at the north canal of Fanchuan, near the tomb of the Venerable Xuanzang. Kuiji's appearance was robust and imposing, eight feet tall, with a heroic spirit surpassing ten thousand men; upon his nape was a jade pillow bone, and the patterns on his ten fingers were all coiled and folded like seals. Those who saw him were awed into submission. Yet his heart was compassionate, and he delighted in instructing others. In his later years he prayed to be born in the Inner Court [of Tuṣita], observing the precepts ever more devoutly. He once commissioned a jade image of Mañjuśrī and transcribed the Mahāprajñāpāramitā Sūtra in gold, both of which brought auspicious responses. Earlier, Vinaya Master Daoxuan of Nanshan, whose fame in promoting the vinaya shook the Five Indias, moved the celestial kitchens to offer him food; he had always looked down upon Kuiji's indulgence in the "three carts" and treated him with little courtesy. Kuiji once visited Daoxuan. On that day, midday passed and the celestial food did not arrive. Only when Kuiji took his leave and departed did the celestial deities descend. Daoxuan rebuked them for being late. The celestial deity said, "We just saw a Mahāyāna bodhisattva here, flanked by guards of extreme majesty, so there was no way for us to enter." Hearing this, Daoxuan was greatly astonished, and thereupon respect for Kuiji increased far and near. Prior to this, the Venerable Xuanzang had personally received from Master Śīlabhadra in the Western Regions the Yogācārabhūmi vijñapti-mātra lineage; Kuiji completely grasped its subtleties and broadened its source and stream. In the realm and for later generations, he was revered and regarded as the founder of the School of the Three Vehicles' Dharma-Characteristics that Reveals the Principle, which is called the Ci'en Teaching.
