(Fourteenth year, bingyin) The Japanese monks Yōei, Fushō, and others arrived in Yangzhou. They presented ten saṃghāṭī robes, upon which were embroidered depictions of mountains, rivers, and exotic objects; these had been entrusted by their sovereign to be bestowed upon Chinese monks of eminent conduct. At that time, the Vinaya Master Jianzhen received these robes, sighed in admiration that foreigners possessed the buddha-lineage, and wished to go and transform them. Just then, Yōei, Fushō, and the others also urged and invited him, so he boarded a ship and sailed east. Blown by foul winds into seas of fish and serpents, they all escaped disaster because of Jianzhen's exalted vinaya practice. Once they arrived in Japan, the king there had prior knowledge of it, deigned to welcome and comfort him in person, and lodged him in the Vairocana Hall. Before long, he requested Jianzhen to confer the refuges and precepts; the queen and the assembly of ministers all received them in turn. From this time on, Japan first had the vinaya teaching.
