In this year, Chan Master Yifu passed away. The Old Tang History states: Yifu obtained the Dharma from Chan Master Shenxiu. At first he resided at Huagan Temple in Lantian, staying in a ten-foot-square room and not stepping beyond the eaves for over twenty years. He once accompanied the imperial entourage to the Eastern Capital; the prefects, officials, and commoners of the two prefectures of Pu and Hao all carried banners and flowers to welcome him, filling the roads wherever he went. When he passed away, an imperial decree conferred on him the title Chan Master Dazhi (Great Wisdom), and he was buried above Yique, with several tens of thousands of people attending the funeral. Secretariat Drafter Yan Tingzhi composed an inscription for him. Earlier, although Shenxiu was an outstanding figure of the Chan gate in virtue and conduct and was deeply respected by emperors, he never gathered disciples to open a hall and transmit the Dharma. It was with Yifu and Puji that the transmission of the teaching first began in the capital, and for over twenty years all people looked up to them.
