(5. Yi-mao [715 CE]) On the eighth day of the third month, Xuanzong dispatched Zhang Qia, director of a bureau in the Ministry of Rites, carrying an imperial edict to Dangyang Shan to summon Śramaṇa Yixing to court. As an imperial order had been issued twice and no refusal was permitted, Yixing went. An edict directed that he be accommodated in Guangtai Hall. The emperor frequently consulted him on the essentials of bringing peace to the country and comforting the people; Yixing set forth his replies concealing nothing. Soon afterward, Princess Yongmu was to be married off. An imperial decree ordered that she be provided for generously in accordance with the precedent of Princess Taiping. Yixing remonstrated, holding that at the end of Gaozong's reign there was only this single daughter, which was why she was shown exceptional courtesy; yet Taiping eventually incurred guilt through arrogance and usurpation, so she should not be cited as a precedent. The emperor accepted his advice and hastily revoked the order, decreeing that only standard ritual be followed. His loyal admonitions were mostly of this kind. Some reported that Yixing was superior in memory and recitation. One day the emperor ordered the palace registers brought out and shown to him. When Yixing finished perusing them, he had an attendant hold the original text before the emperor while he recited it back, not missing a single word. Amazed and astonished, the emperor looked to his attendants and said: "A sage!" From then on, he frequently summoned him to inquire into the essentials of the Buddha-mind. Yixing's decorous counsel nurtured the sovereign, and the imperial favor grew greater by the day. Because the emperor sought instruction in the Way from him, the people of the realm called him "Heavenly Master."
