(16. Yimao) When National Preceptor Huizhong was about to pass away, Danyuan asked: 'A hundred years from now, if someone asks about the ultimate matter, what should I say?' Zhong said: 'We are fortunate enough to be lovely as we are; why must you need an amulet?' He then entered the palace to bid farewell to Daizong. Daizong asked: 'After the Master passes into extinction, what will this disciple use to remember you?' Zhong said: 'I ask the dānapati to build a seamless stūpa.' The Emperor said: 'Please give me the design of the Master's stūpa.' Zhong remained silent for a long while and said: 'Do you understand?' The Emperor said: 'I do not.' Zhong said: 'After this poor monk departs, my attendant Yingzhen will know this matter.' On the ninth day of the twelfth month, he entered extinction lying on his right side. His disciples enshrined his whole body and built a stūpa in Dangzi Valley. He was posthumously granted the title Chan Master Dazheng ('Great Verification'). The Emperor soon summoned Yingzhen to the inner palace and asked him about the earlier words. Zhen remained silent for a long while and said: 'Does Your Majesty understand?' The Emperor said: 'I do not.' Zhen spoke a verse: 'South of the Xiang and north of the Tan, / Between them is yellow gold filling a realm. / Beneath the shadowless tree we share the same boat; / Upon the lapis lazuli hall, there is no good friend.' Daizong was once in an informal palace hall, pointing to Yu Chao'en, Commissioner of Army Supervision Throughout the Realm, and saying to Zhong: 'Chao'en also understands a bit of the Buddha-Dharma.' Chao'en immediately asked Zhong: 'What is ignorance, and from whence does ignorance arise?' Zhong said: 'The sign of the decline of the Buddha-Dharma has now appeared!' The Emperor asked: 'Why?' Zhong said: 'Even a slave understands how to ask about the Buddha-Dharma; how is this not the sign of decline now appearing?' Chao'en's face flushed with great anger. Zhong said: 'This right here is ignorance; ignorance arises from this!' Chao'en again raised his voice and said: 'Someone said the Master is now a Buddha; is this true?' Zhong said: 'Someone at court said you are the Son of Heaven; is it really so?' Chao'en prostrated on the ground and said: 'A capital crime, a capital crime! Chao'en is truly not the Son of Heaven.' Zhong said: 'I am not a Buddha; therefore two World-Honoured Ones do not teach side by side.' Chao'en said: 'Master, will you remain an ordinary being forever, with no time when you become a Buddha?' Zhong said: 'In the future, I must become a Buddha. What is your surname?' Chao'en said: 'My surname is Yu.' Zhong said: 'When I become a Buddha in the future, I will not be named Huizhong. If you become the Son of Heaven in the future, will you change your surname, or will your surname still be Yu?' Chao'en prostrated on the ground and said: 'A capital crime, a capital crime! From now on, Chao'en truly dares not discuss the Buddha-Dharma with the Master.' Zhong said to the Emperor: 'I nearly scared this slave to death!'
