In the fourteenth year, Chan Master Chonghui of Mount Tianzhu manifested nirvāṇa. The Master was a native of Pengzhou. He obtained the Dharma from Chan Master Niutou Wei, and later resided at Tianzhu Temple. A monk asked, "Before Bodhidharma came to this land, was there still the Buddha Dharma or not?" The Master said, "Set aside the time before he came; what about the matter of the present moment?" The monk said, "I do not understand." The Master said, "Eternities of boundless space; a single morning's wind and moon." After a long pause, he added, "Ācārya, do you understand? What is your own lot like? What does it have to do with whether Bodhidharma came or did not come? His coming was very much like a fortune-teller: seeing that you did not understand, he pierced through the shell for you. The hexagram lines have just emerged; good fortune and ill fortune are entirely for you to look at in your own lot." The monk asked, "What kind of person is one who understands divination?" The Master said, "The moment you step out the door, it misses the mark." The monk asked, "Within the ancestral school, I request the Master to present and sing out." He replied: "The stone ox bellows continuously beyond true emptiness; / When the wooden horse neighs, the moon is hidden behind the mountain." The monk asked, "What is the meaning of the coming from the west?" He replied: "The white ape cradles its infant and returns to the azure precipice; / Bees and butterflies hold blossoms in their mouths among the green stamens." When he passed away, his physical body did not decay and still remained after several hundred years.
