14.38

（二十五）　大珠惠海禪師者。建州人。初參馬祖。祖問。從何處來。曰越州大雲寺來。祖曰。來此擬須何事。曰來求佛法。祖曰。自家寶藏不顧。拋家散走作什麼。我這裏一物也無。求什麼佛法。師遂禮拜問。那箇是惠海自家寶藏。祖曰。即今問我者是汝寶藏。一切具足更無欠少。使用自在何假向外求覓。師於言下自識本心不由知覺。禮謝畢服勞。久之後以受業師年老歸奉養。乃晦迹藏用外現癡訥。撰頓悟入道要門一卷。為好事竊出。及馬祖見之。即告眾曰。越州有大珠。圓明光透自在。無遮障處也。眾中有知師本姓朱者。遂共尋訪。師由是道望顯著。說法彼翻海湧浩然無礙。有頓悟門及廣語。行于世。

(25) Chan Master Dazhu Huihai was a native of Jianzhou. When he first visited Mazu, Mazu asked, 'Where did you come from?'
He said, 'I have come from Dayun Monastery in Yuezhou.'
Mazu said, 'What business do you intend to seek by coming here?'
He said, 'I have come to seek the Buddha-dharma.'
Mazu said, 'Not looking after your own family treasure, what are you doing running around abandoning your home? Here I do not have a single thing. What Buddha-dharma are you seeking?'
The master thereupon bowed and asked, 'What is Huihai's own family treasure?'
Mazu said, 'That which is asking me right now is your treasure: it is entirely complete, lacking nothing at all; its use is spontaneous and free—why rely on seeking outside?'
At these words, the master recognized his own original mind without relying on intellection. After bowing in gratitude, he attended upon him for a long time. Later, because his preceptor was old, he returned to care for him. He then hid his traces and concealed his function, outwardly appearing foolish and slow of speech. He composed the Essential Gate for Entering the Path through Sudden Enlightenment in one fascicle. It was surreptitiously brought out by a busybody. When Mazu saw it, he told the assembly, 'In Yuezhou there is a Great Pearl (Dazhu); its round brilliance shines through unobstructed, without any hindrance.' Some in the assembly knew that the master's original surname was Zhu, and thereupon went together to seek him out. From this, the master's reputation in the Way became prominent. When he preached the Dharma, it surged like a cresting sea, vast and unobstructed. His Sudden Enlightenment Gate and Extensive Sayings circulate in the world.
